CALLING all Maine nursing mommas! Join others at Knowlton Park Saturday at 10:30 for the annual Big Latch On, an attempt to break last year’s record of 14,536 children simultaneously breastfeeding in 28 countries.

The Big Latch On is an effort that started in New Zealand in 2005 as part of World Breastfeeding Week, which starts next week. Since then, the event has grown to global notoriety.

According to a press release, the event is designed to raise awareness of breastfeeding support and knowledge as well as help communities positively support breasfeeding in public areas. It’s an issue that’s received national attention recently due to several instances where breastfeeding mothers were asked to leave public places or cover themselves while feeding their children.

“I want us to create a world where every family is supported and nurtured by their community and where breastfeeding is an ordinary part of life,” Joanne Edwards, Big
Latch On global coordinator said. ”We’re celebrating women and babies and families.”

The Ellsworth event will take place at Knowlton Park on State Street in Ellsworth at 10:30 p.m. Participants should plan on arriving at least a half hour early to register for the event.
