Rockland synagogue to explore significance of Jewish back-to-the-landers

For at least a couple of generations Jewish residents in Maine have made an effort to get “back-to-the-land.” So much so, a Rockland synagogue is hosting an event to talk about the movement, its impact on the the area and what it means for them to be connected to the land.

The informal panel Thursday from 7-9 p.m. will explore first and second generation Jewish back-to-the-landers taking a look at what motivates their choices and what role their Jewish identities play in their lives.

Panelists for the event include: Ben Marcus of Sheepscot General Store in Whitefield; Apple residents and master gardeners Kal Winer and Linda Tatelbaum, and Bonnie Rukin of Slow Money Maine.

Rabbi Natan Margalit, visiting rabbi at Adas Yoshuron in Rockland and president of Organic Torah, will serve as moderator. Organic Torah is a nonprofit, educational program that works to create a healthier, more sustainable world.

According to a press release, everyone is welcome at the panel, taking place at Adas Yoshuron Synagogue, 50 Willow St., Rockland. For more information about the event call 207-594-4523 or email info@adasyoshuron.org.
