I love the idea of harvesting wood to heat my home instead of relying on pellets purchased each fall at the local home depot or worse, oil. I know it’s more work, but there’s just something about sitting around a wood fire as the snow swirls outside that sounds so cozy.

But alas, with just a quarter acre in the middle of Bangor, I’m not sure that’s going to happen any time soon. In the meantime, we have a fire pit we use year around to burn brush and logs from the two trees we have cut down.

Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson is offering a Home Firewood Production workshop this weekend from 9 to 11 a.m. HVNC is a nonprofit education and recreation center with 1,000 acres of land that includes more than 25 miles of trails and a large pond.

Topics will include heating your home with wood, processing log length wood, how firewood harvesting affects a woodlot and options for storing and drying wood during the summer.
